2002-2003

Short program: Hook

He is vicious.
His plans are evil.
His gestures are more terrifying than ever before.
He is going to capture the audience with his devilish plans, skilful fencing and defiant attitude.
He is bad and He is back.
After sailing the seas for ten years,
Captain Hook has returned!!!

Ten years ago (spring 1993), when Anu Jääskeläinen started working with Marigold, their last free program with their old coach was Hook. Ten years ago, in 1993, brother Oula Jääskeläinen skated his best ever placements at the European Championships, placing sensationally second after the short program. His short program was… you guessed it, Hook. So to celebrate her 10th year coaching Marigold, Anu thought it is was time for Hook to return. And this time she gets to do the choreography...

Free program: ‘The Circle of Life’

"Rule this land with peace and love"

There is a constant battle between good and evil. But we have to believe that in the end good always triumphs. Life takes us through unforgettable adventures and we all get our share of different experiences. Some of them are happy, some of them are sad. At times we get lost in this world and lose our way, but we battle hard and won’t give up until we find our way back home. The advice we get from our loved ones guides us and gives us strength to carry on. Even though some of them are no longer with us, they will always walk by our side, live in our hearts and help us find our place on this earth.

The sun rises every day, life goes on and the Circle of Life moves us all...
Every day, and always.

The music is from The Lion King and the choreography is skated as different animals, but the story has a much deeper meaning for us. Sanna’s death had a big influence on this program. Despite the sorrow and sadness, life goes on. We are all part of this circle of life and we have our own special place in it. This program truly shows the joy of life and skating.

After all the attention and raves the Dracula free program got, it was a little terrifying trying to work out what to do next. How could Anu ever come up with anything as special and spectacular as the Dracula program? A lot of different ideas, themes and music were running trough her head and she must have changed her mind about five times. Eventually, the Lion King felt right. After skating the dramatic Dracula, Anu wanted the girls to smile and have some fun on the ice. She is very happy with her choice and the final result, the choreography of the ‘Circle of Life’ free program. Sanna’s death gave this program special meaning and gave more depth to the girls’ performance. This could indeed beat Dracula as the all-time favourite program... and that is something!

Maarit Timonen did an amazing job when she hand-painted every single dress individually. So no two are exactly alike, although they all look the same. The top part of the costume pictures the sun, new life, dawning day and Sanna. The skirt is the darkness of the sky, the sorrows of life and the night sky with stars that lead us back onto the right path if we get lost. The orange underneath describes the new dawning day and rising hope, the continuity of life.

…“Remember who you are. Through despair and hope, through faith and love. You’ll see every day, we’ll never turn away. We rule this land with peace and love. We are more than we are. We are one…”
